Dwight Yoakam will release a new album after 9 years

By Marco Aarden

The name Dwight Yoakam might not immediately ring a bell, but this American country singer, songwriter, and actor is a true legend in his genre. Known for his unique blend of traditional honky-tonk and rock influences, and of course his iconic cowboy hat, Dwight Yoakam has an unmistakable style. His new single, “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom)”, has just been released, a collaboration with none other than Post Malone. This song promises great things for his upcoming album “Brighter Days,” set to release on November 15.

Dwight Yoakam already has two Grammy Awards and an award from the Academy of Country Music to his name, and has been nominated countless times. My first introduction to Dwight Yoakam was with his hit “Guitars, Cadillacs” from 1986, a song that perfectly embodies the honky-tonk sound. The album of the same name was clearly influenced by the Bakersfield sound, made famous by Buck Owens. You may know hits like “I’ve Got A Tiger By The Tail” and “Streets Of Bakersfield”, which Dwight and Buck released together in 1988.

Dwight Yoakam: The Man Behind “Honky Tonk Man”

Dwight broke through in the 1980s with his debut album “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.”, breathing new life into country music with his raw, retro style. He scored hits like “Honky Tonk Man” and “Fast as You”, and has sold over 25 million albums worldwide. Besides his music career, Dwight is also a respected actor, with roles in films such as “Sling Blade” and “Panic Room.”

On November 15, 2024, Dwight will release his first album in nine years, titled “Brighter Days.” This long-awaited album combines his signature “cowpunk” style, inspired by his Bakersfield roots, with new influences. The album features collaborations, including the lead single with Post Malone, and includes a total of 12 new songs and two covers, including “Keep On the Sunny Side” by The Carter Family and “Bound Away” by Cake.

The album, produced by Dwight himself and mixed by Grammy-winner Chris Lord-Alge, stays true to his classic sound but also explores new, modern influences in both the lyrics and the energy of the music. This album is a must-listen for both longtime fans and new listeners looking for a fresh take on country music.
