When I watched “Bob Marley: One Love” (2024), I was filled with anticipation to see how this biopic would capture the essence of one of my musical idols. The film primarily focuses on the pivotal period around the creation of Marley’s legendary “Exodus” album.

From the start, Kingsley Ben-Adir’s portrayal of Bob Marley was impressive. His ability to embody Marley’s physicality and spirit was so convincing that it was easy to forget I was watching an actor. Lashana Lynch, playing Rita Marley, also delivered a powerful performance, adding depth and emotion to her role.
However, as the movie progressed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. The narrative often felt disjointed, with flashbacks to Marley’s childhood that seemed out of place. The film struggled to provide a coherent and in-depth exploration of Marley’s complex life and the socio-political context of his music, missing an opportunity to delve deeper into the influential aspects of his journey.
On a positive note, Robert Elswit’s cinematography was a highlight. The vibrant and warm portrayal of Marley’s world, especially during the concert scenes, was captivating and brought a dynamic energy to the film. These moments were engaging and made me long for more of Marley’s live performances.
Despite the strong performances and visual appeal, the film ultimately felt like a superficial take on Marley’s life. It lacked the depth and nuance I had hoped for. While the film touched on some of Marley’s flaws, like his infidelity, it didn’t delve deep enough to provide a well-rounded depiction of his character.
In summary, “Bob Marley: One Love” offers an entertaining yet somewhat incomplete look at the life of a musical legend. As a fan of Marley, I appreciated seeing his music and parts of his life brought to the screen. However, for those seeking a more comprehensive and profound portrayal of his impact and legacy, I would recommend other sources, such as the 2012 documentary “Marley”.
